There’s been progress….
As with any big project, this has a long way to go, but here’s some progress photos for those interested in following along.
Week 1
The front door has been replaced! Which means we can now open and close it (and lock it). This is one of the first things we wanted done for security reasons, as you can see the old front door has seen better days - but we think it could still be used for something cool. Got any ideas?
The living room walls and ceiling are about done with patching and any areas that couldn’t be salvaged were replaced with new drywall.
We pulled the bottom cabinets out of the kitchen and revealed the old plumbing and some damage to the subfloor. We’ll replace that with new plywood as well as update this plumbing. Then we’ll close this wall off again so the bathroom can’t be seen from the kitchen anymore!
We also had the paneling pulled off and our contractor is repairing the walls in here. Before we close off this wall we’ll have an electrician come in to update the wiring in the bathroom and check for any other red flags about the wiring conditions in the house.
Not a lot to update here, the initial demo is done and now we just need the plumber and electrician to do their thing. Then the window can be pulled out and framed in.
This room has the most drastic changes. The walls no longer look scary! Also how about that ceiling not having a huge hole!
Still lots of work to be done, but movement is happening.
Week 2
Our wall in the kitchen as been replaced! All the interior plumbing has been replaced and this coming week we are digging out the main line from the house to the meter to replace that. The sewer line is also cracked so that’ll be replaced as well. We are aware most people would balk at having to make these improvements - but they’re necessary. Plus, since we already had it all opened up it was the best time to do it.
New GFCI outlets are also installed.
The footer has been poured! One big step towards a functional third bedroom! We will still have to raise the floor to provide a level floor in here, but one step at a time.
Our third bedroom has a wall! Behind this wall (on the right) will be the water heater and washer dryer hook-ups. In the left will be a closet. That door you see in the center? Right now it leads outside. It’s going to get framed in and become the exterior wall. After that we’ll replace the siding outside (current exterior situation pictured below).
We’ve installed updated connections and a drain for the washing machine and replaced all the outlets in the house to something from this century.
Week 3
We have new windows! We opted to go ahead and replace all of them. The old ones were not energy efficient and they didn’t open (a fire hazard).
The old in-floor furnace was being removed while I was there to take photos. Once this antique is gone we can patch up the floor. We will be providing a way to heat the house, don’t worry. Remember that coat closet in the living room? That’s where the new furnace will live.
In the bathroom, the plumbing and electric has progressed enough to start putting walls back in place. The old sewer drain here had a massive crack so we also replaced that. The flooring still needs some repair work, and soon it will no longer be a rotting pit into the crawl space and that’s what we call progress.
The vinyl insert also came in and work has started on turning the old window into an exterior wall.
Speaking of exterior … the new water line from the house to the meter is going in this. No more rusty, cracked main lines for us!
We’re having our cabinets built for the kitchen and they should be installed later this week.
Expect another update in a few weeks!
